Hi. Most of the Savages can have this repair done w/o removing
the engine. I've had two Savages and was able to remove the valve
cover w/o much trouble at all. Tank off, remove the solenoid (which gets
in the way) and get some proper wrenches. When you start removing the valve
cover it looks as though it won't come out, it hits the cross bar of the frame
BUT...when you wiggle and worry the thing the valve cover, along with attached
cams usually will slip out. On the front right side of the engine block you'll
see this 1" size rubber plug. Take it out, use a chisel to carefully remove
the remaining head gasket. Get yourself some high temperature gasket goo or silicone
and wack it to the plug (or better yet purchase a new plug with a better design fix)
and gasket goo the assembly where required,, and put it back together.
The first time I did this job, I didn't really know what I was getting into and it
only took 3 hours to do. As mentioned previously, Yes this is a warranty item and
no you shouldn't have a bunch of extra leaks because any Susi mechanic shop does this
repair as a "matter of fact" for the Savage. It's common as mud and they'll have done
it 1,000 times. Good luck.
